This is a list of the general semantic and ontological tags supported by the Adso database and
software. We'll try to keep this list as up-to-date as possible. If you edit the database to
include this tag information, please remember to provide it in the uppercase as listed below:
Two notes: (1) Suggestions for new parts of speech / ontological tags are welcome. (2) the
software works by pattern matching, so all words marked CHINESEPERSON will be treated as a subset
of PERSON. This means you should avoid creating new tags which contain other tags as substrings
unless the implied logical relationship holds.
ADDRESS
Assignations like "Doctor", "Vice President", and "Chairman". Frequently followed by personal names
ADJT
English Adjectives and Chinese Xingrongci
ADVB
Adverbs -- words like "happily", "quickly", etc.
AUXV
Auxiliary Verbs -- also known as "helper verbs", auxiliary verbs are words like "can", "should",
"must". Note the uniform conjugation of the following verb
CAD
Chinese Adverbs of Degree like "hen3" or "tai4". These words precede Xingrongci.
CHENGYU
Chengyu or Chinese idioms
CHINESEPERSON
Full Chinese personal name like "Jackie Chan", "Jiang Zemin", etc.
CITY
Cities and towns
COUNTRY
Countries
DATE
Dates
DOUBLENAME
Chinese family names that consist of two rather than once character (eg. 第五).
EARTHLY
The twelve earthly branches associated with Chinese astrology.
FEMALE
Indicates a feminine word. Almost always used in combination with personal names, as in the tag
FEMALEPERSON.
HEAVENLY
The ten heavenly stems associated with Chinese astrology.
MALE
Indicates a masculine word. Almost always used in combination with personal names, as in the tag
MALEPERSON.
MEASUREMENT
Measurement words like "kilowatt", "cubic inch", etc.
MW
Measure words like 个, 张, etc.
NAME
Chinese family name, like 张, 王, etc.
NOUN
Nouns
OCPP
Obscure Chinese Political Phrases like "The Three Represents", "The Three Rurals", "The Four
Respects", etc.
ORG
Organizational names like "Ford", "Coca Cola", "Herald Tribune"
ONOMAT
Onomatopoeia -- words that express a sound, such as 阿, or 嗯, or 嗨.
OTHR
Other -- miscellaneous and hard to classify
PHONETIC
Phonetic words or characters - those composed of characters which have been chosen merely to
represent a particular sound. There are typically used with words imported from English or other
lanugages, and most commonly used in proper names
PLACE
Place names and geographic places
PERSON
Personal names like "Barbara" or "John"
PROPERNOUN
Proper Nouns - any proper nouns that do not fit in other classes.
QUESTION
Question words like "what", "how", "why", etc.
SLANG
Slang -- note that slang can be marked with additional tags to suggest the origin of the phrase.
The structure for these tags is to provide the pinyin of the source and add "HUA" to the end, such
as DONGBEIHUA or SHANGHAIHUA or HEIHUA
SWAN
Starting with a number -- tag for words or pharses that start with a number. This helps the
grammar engine.

Xingrongci are a special subset of Adjectives which can be preceeded by Chinese Adverbs of Degree.
